- The Mevlevi Order of America in Seattle invites you to join in a special music-centric zikr practice featuring our special musical guest and teacher, Dr. Timuçin Çevikoğlu, who is visiting us from Ankara, Türkiye. Zikr is the Sufi practice of remembrance of the divine source and our inseparability from it. Through breath, movement, chant, and music, we attune ourselves to the presence of the divine. The Mevlevi zikr we are offering is a syncretic blend of traditional hadra and devran zikr elements drawn from diverse Anatolian Sufi practices, featuring nearly continuous music comprised of devotional Sufi hymns known as ilahis which set the verse of such ecstatic Sufi poets as Yunus Emre, Nesimi, and Hüdâyî, among others. Timuçin hoca (teacher) will lead a cohort of local musicians in a performance of this powerful music. Bear in mind that zikr is a participatory ritual, not a concert of spiritual music.
A superb vocalist, master drummer and neyzen (player of the Turkish reed flute), Dr. Timuçin Çevikoğlu is an academic researcher specializing in the study of Ottoman makam musics and Mevlevi history and culture. He has authored several books and recorded extensively as a leading practitioner of Mevlevi music.
The zikr marks the beginning of a week with Dr. Çevikoğlu, who will be offering musical instruction and performing in several events throughout the week, culminating in a performance of the Mevlevi Ayin-i Şerif, the ceremonial ritual of the whirling dervishes.
All are welcome. We ask for a goodwill donation of at least $20 to help defray the travel costs of Dr. Çevikoğlu’s visit to Seattle, his first since the pandemic began.
