Our 2022 Spiritual Discernment
ENCOUNTERING THE INFINITE
Meeting the Divine Mother in Nature, Humanity, and the Cosmos
~a contemplative, exploratory inquiry and discovery
“To be alive in this beautiful, self–organizing universe—to participate in the dance of life with senses to perceive it, lungs that breathe it, organs that draw nourishment from it—is a wonder beyond words. Gratitude for the gift of life is the primary wellspring of all religions, the hallmark of the mystic, the source of all true art. Furthermore, it is a privilege to be alive in this time when we can choose to take part in the self–healing of our world.”—Joanna Macy
“Making time for solitude in wild nature helps us to have the largest conversation we are capable of having with the world. Communion with wild nature helps us embody our ultimate place and act wisely in recognition of our kinship with all life. ~ Daniel Wahl, “Designing Regenerative Cultures”
“I am talking about being human. Wild, untamed, free fully at home on earth and knowing your place in the web of life. A Human Being as Mother Earth intended you to be.” ~ Paul Francis “Rewilding Yourself…”
“When beauty touches our lives, the moment becomes luminous. These grace-moments are gifts that surprise us. When we look beyond the moment to our life journey, perhaps we can choose a new rhythm of journeying which would be more conscious of beauty and more open to inviting her to disclose herself to us in all the situations we travel through.” ~John O’Donohue
“All creatures of Earth are looking to us for their destiny. Among these are our children and grandchildren, who depend on our decisions for the sustenance and flourishing of the life systems of the planet. This remains one of our primary challenges in the twenty first century.”
~ Father Thomas Berry, Evening Thoughts

We are divine beings, with the power to create!
“What would you create if you knew you could not fail?”
May we bring healing to the world through our collective love…

Nature: Our Teacher
The wilderness is our classroom
and nature is our teacher.
If you listen close enough,
the wind will whisper what she’s seen to you
as she billows through the trees.
If you are quiet enough,
the black capped chickadees, the downy woodpeckers, and the blue-jays
share the secrets they’ve kept.
If you look close enough,
the tracks will lead you to who has been there.
If you are calm enough,
the still water seduces you to its shores,
to show you the millions of organisms that call it home.
If you are curious enough,
the balsam firs wait,
releasing oxygen from underneath its needles for you.
Nature did not
teach me the pythagorean theorem
or the grammatical components of a sentence.
But nature will
teach me the lessons no human could ever impress upon me.

“In some Native languages the term for plants translates to “those who take care of us.”
“If plants are our oldest teachers, why not let them teach?” ~ Lou
“Lessons from Plants enters into the depth of botanic experience and shows how we might improve human society by better appreciating not just what plants give us but also how they achieve their own purposes. What would it mean to learn from these organisms, to become more aware of our environments and to adapt to our own worlds by calling on perception and awareness?
~ Beronda L. Montgomery, Lessons From Plants
“It had nothing to do with gear or footwear or the backpacking fads or philosophies of any particular era or even with getting from point A to point B.
It had to do with how it felt to be in the wild. With what it was like to walk for miles with no reason other than to witness the accumulation of trees and meadows, mountains and deserts, streams and rocks, rivers and grasses, sunrises and sunsets. The experience was powerful and fundamental. It seemed to me that it had always felt like this to be a human in the wild, and as long as the wild existed it would always feel this way.” ~ Cheryl Strayed, Wild: From Lost to Found on the Pacific Crest Trail
DONATIONS INVITED
Interfaith Community Sanctuary is a grass-roots self-governing spiritual community practicing circular leadership principles. We invite your generous gifts to help us continue offering our ongoing interfaith worship services, classes, and study opportunities. We are stewards of a building (built in 1890) requiring ongoing maintenance. We are dedicated to preserving it as a historic landmark and spiritual center despite the encroaching modern condos flooding our neighborhood. Thank you for helping us with these ways of service.
