Mimouna Celebration
Spring Blessings for Life Renewed
Saturday April 15th at 7:30pm
Interfaith Community Sanctuary
1763 NW 62nd Street
Seattle (Ballard) 98107
The tradition of Mimouna originates in a time in Jewish-Muslim relations in Morocco when
communities shared food and traditions to mark the end of Passover. During Passover, breads, cakes and leavened breads are not consumed. Before the start of Passover, Jews give away flour, yeast,
and grain to their Muslim neighbors. Then at the end of Passover, both groups celebrate Mimouna together, when Muslims bring sweets to share with their Jewish neighbors. Mimouna is a time to
celebrate luck and good fortune as well as the spring season. Foods shared symbolize fertility, joy, abundance, success, health, and prosperity. This year the end of Passover and the end of the Muslim holy month of Ramadan occur on nearly the same dates. At sunset each day during Ramadan,
Muslims traditionally hold a large meal for friends, family, and neighbors to break their fast. We
are delighted to hold this celebration with people of all faiths, marking both the end of Passover and the end of Ramadan with shared food and blessings for everyone. You are welcome but not required to bring food items to share.*
Join friends of many faith and spiritual traditions as we celebrate this beloved occasion at the end of
Passover, and the end of Ramadan. We will begin our evening by welcoming all who have gathered:
spiritual leaders, their families, friends and those who are inspired by the promise of peace created through the sharing of beautiful gatherings from traditions beyond our own. At this celebration we
shall share about how Mimouna offers us an opportunity to joyously meet with others of diverse faith
and spiritual traditions and to share Blessings for springtime Renewal of life.
Our gathering will be guided by Rabbi Yohanna Kinberg, Rabbi of Congregation Kol Ami.
